Kodaikanal sits high enough in the Palani hills that it is rarely uncomfortable. What changes through the year is how wet it is, how thick the mist gets, and how many people are there.
March to June
Warm days, cool evenings, and the busiest months. This is when the plains are hot and everybody leaves them, so the town and the well-known viewpoints fill up on weekends.
Good for long walks and early starts. Worth going midweek if you can, or staying outside the town.
July to September
The monsoon. Mist sits in the valleys for days, the forest is at its greenest and streams usually run heavy. It is also the quietest stretch of the year, which is the trade.
Trails get slippery, so walking plans stay shorter and more flexible. If you want the dramatic version of these hills and do not mind being rained on, this is it.
October to February
Generally the most settled weather and, for most people, the nicest time to be there. Clear mornings are common, evenings are properly cold, and the crowds thin out after the holidays.
- December and January are the coldest. Bring a real warm layer
- Visibility from viewpoints is usually better in this window, though nobody can promise a clear morning
- Late October still catches some rain
Our recommendation: October to February if you want comfortable weather, July to September if you want the place mostly to yourself and are relaxed about rain.
What we will not tell you
That you will definitely see a particular view. Hill weather turns in twenty minutes, and any operator promising you a sunrise is guessing. Our Kodai trip runs three days and two nights, and the walking plan flexes with whatever the weather is doing.
